Condolences: Iowa Chief Justice Mark S. Cady Condolences
Resolution 3: Condolences
WHEREAS, the members of the Conference of Chief Justices are deeply saddened by the death of Chief Justice Mark S. Cady on November 15, 2019; and
WHEREAS, at the time of his death, Chief Justice Cady, was serving as the President of the Conference of Chief Justices and as Chair of the National Center for State Courts Board of Directors providing wise counsel and valuable leadership; and
WHEREAS, Chief Justice Cady was a lifelong public servant beginning as a District Court Judge in 1983, thereafter being appointed to the Iowa Court of Appeals in 1997, the Iowa Supreme Court in 1998, and was named Chief Justice in 2011; and
WHEREAS, Chief Justice Cady throughout his tenure as chief justice was an active member of the Conference of Chief Justice serving on numerous committees, chairing the Courts, Children and Families Joint Committee, the Resolutions Committee, and hosting the Annual Conference; and
WHEREAS, Chief Justice Cady worked tirelessly and selflessly to champion better access to justice and to improve the courts of Iowa; and
WHEREAS, Chief Justice Cady was a person of keen intellect demonstrated not only in his opinions but in the numerous law review and journal articles he authored; and
WHEREAS, Chief Justice Cady was a person of the utmost integrity, always demonstrating the highest degree of professionalism, but most importantly, he had an abiding sense of right, wrong, and fairness, was inherently kind to all, and quite simply was "the nicest guy you could ever hope to meet"; and
WHEREAS, Chief Justice Cady was respected and admired by all members of the Conference of Chief Justices as an exceptional Chief Justice, valued friend, and person of good humor;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the members of the Conference of Chief Justices express their deepest condolences and heartfelt sympathies to his wife Becky and their family for their sorrow and loss.
