In Memory of Chief Justice Harry L. Carrico Condolences

WHEREAS, the members of the Conference of Chief Justices are deeply saddened by the death of Chief Justice Harry L. Carrico (retired) of Virginia on January 27, 2013; and

WHEREAS, Chief Justice Carrico served as President of the Conference of Chief Justices and as Chair of the National Center for State Courts Board of Directors from 1989-1990, where he provided wise counsel and valuable leadership; and 

WHEREAS, Chief Justice Carrico served as a justice on the Supreme Court of Virginia for 42 years and as Chief Justice of the Commonwealth of Virginia for 22 years until his retirement in 2003. From his retirement until his death he served as Senior Justice on the Supreme Court of Virginia; and 

WHEREAS, Chief Justice Carrico participated in the founding of the National Center for State Courts in Williamsburg, Virginia in 1971 and in the groundbreaking for the NCSC Headquarters Building in Williamsburg in 1976; and 

WHEREAS, upon his retirement the NCSC created the Harry L. Carrico Award to honor Chief Justice Carrico and to recognize a sitting state Chief Justice who has inspired, prompted, or led an innovation of national significance in the field of judicial administration; and 

WHEREAS, Chief Justice Carrico was the quintessential Chief Justice combining superb intellect, wisdom developed through more than a half century on the trial and appellate bench, humility, the highest integrity, and an unmatched work ethic; and 

WHEREAS, Chief Justice Carrico served on eighteen different committees of the Conference of Chief Justices and hosted either the Annual or Midyear Meeting of the Conference six times; and

WHEREAS, Chief Justice Carrico was respected and admired by all members of the Conference of Chief Justices as an exceptional chief justice and valued friend;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the members of the Conference of Chief Justices express their deepest condolences and heartfelt sympathies to his family for their sorrow and loss.
