In Support of State Implementation of the State Court Guide to Statistical Reporting
Resolution 23: In Support of State Implementation of the State Court Guide to Statistical Reporting, 2003
WHEREAS, the Conference of Chief Justices (CCJ) and the Conference of State Court Administrators (COSCA) seek to improve the administration of justice through the development, exchange and dissemination of information and knowledge to state judicial systems; and
WHEREAS, COSCA in December 2003, and CCJ in 2004, adopted Resolutions in support of principles of effective judicial governance and accountability, recognizing that courts need to assure that comprehensive data on filings, caseloads, case processing standards and goals, and expenditures are collected and made readily available; and
WHEREAS, COSCA established the Court Statistics Committee to work in partnership with the National Center for State Courts to carry out the Court Statistics Project (CSP), the primary function of which is to collect and analyze data relating to the work of the nation's state courts; and
WHEREAS, the CSP developed data definitions and data standards in the State Court Guide to Statistical Reporting, 2003 in consultation with state and trial court administrators, state and trial court statisticians, and other experts throughout the court and academic communities; and
WHEREAS, the Court Statistics Committee has approved the CSP's State Court Guide to Statistical Reporting, 2003 and recommends that the Guide be adopted as the model approach to data reporting for the state trial and appellate courts;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Conference of Chief Justices and the Conference of State Court Administrators adopt the State Court Guide to Statistical Reporting, 2003 as the model approach to data reporting for the state trial and appellate courts; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED THAT CCJ and COSCA urge their members to take immediate steps to implement the Guide in their states.
