Resolution 1: In Support of the Rule of Law Conference Commemorating the First Permanent English Settlement in Jamestown, Virginia
WHEREAS, the Conference of Chief Justices represents the leadership of state judicial systems charged with ensuring that justice is administered fairly to all who come before the courts; and
WHEREAS, the Conference encourages state courts to engage in outreach to increase fairness and access to justice and to share successful strategies and useful information among jurisdictions; and
WHEREAS, the Conference has established a Committee on Access to and Fairness in the Courts in furtherance of the principle that equal treatment of all persons under the law is essential to the very concept of justice; and
WHEREAS, as part of a national effort to commemorate the founding of the first permanent English settlement in Jamestown, Virginia 400 years ago, the University of Richmond School of Law, in cooperation with American Inns of Court, will host the Rule of Law Conference in Richmond, Virginia April 11-14, 2007; and
WHEREAS, the Rule of Law Conference will bring together prominent American and British jurists, legal scholars and practitioners to address the rule of law as it applies to religious freedom, due process and free speech, international dispute resolution and cultural differences; and
WHEREAS, United States Supreme Court Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr., Justice Stephen G. Breyer and Retired Justice Sandra Day O'Connor will participate in the Conference;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Conference endorses and supports the Rule of Law Conference and urges each Chief Justice to attend.
