Download the resolution

WHEREAS, voter information guides available in print and on-line provide information concerning the biographical background of a candidate for election at negligible cost; and

WHEREAS, it has been demonstrated that the availability of such biographical information concerning judicial candidates helps to meet the information needs of voters and has the potential to increase the proportion of the electorate casting votes for candidates for judicial office;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Conference of Chief Justices

  • Supports the concept of state voter information guides containing biographical information pertaining to candidates for election to the state courts in which judicial elections are held and encourages chief justices in those states to advocate for and facilitate this concept; and
  • Encourages, where appropriate, the enactment into law of a requirement to provide such background information in voter information guides, in both printed and electronic form.

Adopted as proposed by the CCJ Task Force on Politics and Judicial Selection/Judicial Salaries at the 2010 Annual Meeting on July 28, 2010.
