Resolution 32: In Support of a National Study "Understanding the Jury"
WHEREAS, the classic study The American Jury (1966), funded by the Ford Foundation, provided our first in-depth understanding of the jury; and
WHEREAS, that work needs to be extended to today's cases and today's juries; and
WHEREAS, new research methods are now available to make the study more useful to the courts; and
WHEREAS, the National Center for State Courts, the Federal Judicial Center and a consortium of the country's leading researchers have planned and proposed such a national study:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Conference of Chief Justices and the Conference of State Court Administrators support the efforts of these organizations to accomplish this needed study, will provide advice to the study on the research questions to be answered, and will to the best of their abilities assist in the study by seeking the cooperation of the trial courts to provide the needed data.
